Olga Luz Rodriguez Urias, CGMS, is a tribal administrator with over a decade of experience in tribal government operations, financial management, and grants administration. Throughout her career, she has led organizational improvements, bringing departments into compliance and strengthening fiscal accountability. She is passionate about serving tribal communities and improving access to resources through effective grant management. She is a Certified Grants Management Specialist (CGMS) and is pursuing her MBA to further enhance her leadership and impact in Indian Country.

How did you end up in grants management?

I started my career in tribal government in an entry-level administrative role, where I was exposed to many aspects of operations, including grants. Over time, I became more involved in supporting grant applications, compliance and reporting. As I advanced into leadership roles, grants management became a key part of my responsibilities, especially in securing funding and ensuring successful program implementation for the community.

What is your favorite or most impactful grant program you have been a part of and why?

Programs that directly improve community services and infrastructure. One example is funding that helped strengthen tribal operations and bring financial systems back into compliance. These types of grants are meaningful to me because they create long-term sustainability and build a stronger foundation for future growth and opportunities.

What is your biggest work challenge and how do you manage it?

Balancing multiple priorities, including compliance, operations, and community needs, often with limited resources. I manage this by staying organized, prioritizing high-impact tasks, and maintaining clear communication with my team and leadership. I also focus on building strong processes and delegating effectively to ensure that critical responsibilities are met.

What NGMA member benefit has been most useful to you?

Access to training and resources that strengthen my understanding of grants compliance and best practices. These tools have been valuable in helping me ensure that our programs remain compliant and effective.

What is your advice to anyone interested in pursuing the CGMS credential?

Invest the time in truly understanding the full grants lifecycle, rather than just memorizing information for the exam. The CGMS credential is valuable because it strengthens both your knowledge and your credibility in the field. Stay consistent with your studying, use available resources, and connect what you learn to real-world experience whenever possible.

How do you recharge after a long week at work?

Spending time with my family and intentionally disconnecting from work. I also value quiet time to reflect and reset, which helps me return to work focused and ready for the week ahead.
